OVERVIEW

Design your future

UPEI’s Bachelor of Science in Sustainable Design Engineering program focuses on engineering design as an engineering discipline in itself. Sustainable design engineers are problem solvers. They use design skills, engineering knowledge, math and science to deliver innovative and sustainable solutions to modern-day problems. A sustainable solution is one in which all factors and stakeholders are considered. It goes beyond just providing an efficient, attractive, on-time, and on-budget solution. It also cares about how such goals are achieved and about its impact on people, the environment and society.

Our program provides students with a solid technical foundation which supports the development of their design skills. Just as important, though, the program also provides the professional skills necessary to succeed as a professional engineer. To achieve this, we have created a unique and innovative design clinic model that is integrated throughout all years of the program. In the design clinics, students are immersed in hands-on, experiential learning while working on real projects for a wide range of external partners from the community, municipalities, government, industry and others.

ASSOCIATE DEAN – FACULTY OF

SUSTAINABLE DESIGN ENGINEERING

The Sustainable Design Engineering program integrates a stream of project-based design clinic courses that allow students to develop knowledge and skills by working on real industry-based projects. Students in the Faculty of Sustainable Design Engineering are equipped with the most recent tools for solving engineering problems and introducing new design features that incorporate all the sustainability pillars to the industry and society. The Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board accredits the UPEI Sustainable Design Engineering program. Thus, students will learn from certified Professional Engineers in Canada, and graduates of the program will go beyond the local borders to compete globally.

Mission & Values

The Faculty of Sustainable Design Engineering is devoted to developing engineers with exceptional design and professional skills combined with a global perspective; engineers who are broadly capable, globally and socially aware, creative, communicative, and entrepreneurial. Our graduates are ready from day one to provide sustainable engineering solutions to meet the challenges of today’s and tomorrow’s world.

Why choosing this field?

Our leading-edge Program of Sustainable Design Engineering is the perfect place for you to start your post-secondary engineering education. Non-traditional learning spaces, design studios, workshops, product assembly labs, and a design competition center—specifically outfitted for your success.

Moreover, an integrated, stream of project-based design clinic courses through all four-years of the program provides students with the opportunity to develop knowledge and skills through working on real community and industry-based projects.

The UPEI Faculty of Sustainable Design Engineering is devoted to developing engineers with exceptional design and professional skills combined with a global perspective.

Focus Areas

In addition to fundamental science, engineering science and mathematics courses, students are required to develop skills in engineering design, communication, analysis, project management, professional ethics and more. With a solid grounding in these fundamentals, students in Program Years 3 and 4 can enhance their technical knowledge by choosing an engineering focus area

  • Mechatronics
  • Sustainable energy

COURSE STRUCTURE

Curriculum & Course Structure

The program is designed with high degree of flexibility that allows students to select from the following course structure matrices

Career Opportunities

The growing global focus on the ability to develop or enhance efficient solutions for systems and processes in both private and public companies will open many exciting career opportunities now and in the future for the program graduates.  Sustainable Design Engineers can work as design engineers, industrial engineers, procurement, and development engineers in various sectors such as aerospace, automotive, marine and renewable energy sectors.

Faculty

The Faculty of Sustainable Design Engineering has exceptional scholars, instructors, and mentors, with more being hired each year as we open new, progressive, and unique programs. Here, you’ll learn directly from these world-class professors, Canadian professional engineers, and researchers in small classes where you’ll have easy access to them.

Facilities

The Faculty of Sustainable Design Engineering is housed in a cutting-edge facility specifically designed to foster innovation, entrepreneurship, and industry–university collaboration. The groundbreaking ceremony was held in 2017 and the new building was officially opened less than one year later, in August 2018.

Designed to enhance the student-learning experience, the building represents a move away from the traditional classroom and includes design studios/ collaborative classrooms, ideation spaces, and a state-of-the-art machine shop.

The faculty encourage a team-focused, project-based approach to engineering education and immerse students in a realistic engineering design environment.

In addition to the Machine shop, which allow for prototyping and fabrication of parts and products. The Student Innovation Lab is equipped with a new 100-Watt state-of-the-art Laser Cutter, five 3D printers, and a 3d Scanner, all available for students to use while rapid prototyping their ideas.  The Machine Shop is equipped with general fabrication equipment, as well as Computer Aided Design (CAD) Milling Machine.

Day-to-day operations are supported by Engineering Faculty as well as technicians with industry experience in areas such as 3D printing, machining, electronics and mechatronics.

ACCREDITATION

The Faculty of Sustainable Design Engineering (FSDE) at UPEI Cairo has been granted accreditation from the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB) for the Bachelor of Science in Sustainable Design Engineering.

The CEAB—a body of Engineers Canada—accredits undergraduate engineering programs to ensure they provide the academic requirements for licensure as a professional engineer in Canada. The CEAB exists to ensure Canada’s engineering education system remains among the best in the world by setting national standards for engineering education and providing expertise in assessing engineering education on behalf of the provincial and territorial engineering regulatory bodies.  The CEAB of Canada belongs to the Washington Accord (https://engineerscanada.ca/accreditation/the-washington-accord), which also includes many other countries.

The members of this Accord recognize the “substantial equivalence” of programs from any of these member countries in satisfying the academic requirements for the practice of engineering at the professional level in these countries.

The Egyptian Supreme Council has also deemed UPEI’s program to be equivalent to engineering degrees delivered by Egyptian universities. This means that graduates from the UPEI Cairo Campus will be eligible to be qualified to practice engineering in both Canada and Egypt.

INDUSTRY PARTNERSHIP

The Sustainable Design Engineering program integrates a stream of project-based design clinic courses that provides students with the opportunity to develop knowledge and skills by working on real community and industry-based projects through the Industry Partnership Group that builds and manages relationships with diverse industries.

Design Clinic Program

In the Clinic program, teams of 4-6 students act as engineering consultants for a company or organization. The company or organization is called a project partner and supplies the student team with an actual technical challenge from their operation. The technical challenge should be strategic in nature but not on the partner’s critical path. Student teams have a broad network of resources within the faculty to meet project deliverable requirements:

  • Faculty members with industry experience
  • Professional Engineers
  • Teaching Assistants
  • Lab Supervisors and lab technicians
  • Rapid prototyping (3D scanning and printing)
  • Metal and wood fabrication shops
  •  Dedicated project assembly and testing spaces

Project partners can be local, regional, national or international. As well, partners can be based in industry, community or the public sector. There are many benefits to being a project partner:

  • Get a fresh perspective on a technical challenge
  • Help shape the future of engineering
  • Give visibility to or raise awareness about your organization on UPEI campus
  • Work with potential future employees
